Cycling and Walking
Cycling is very popular in the area and there are plenty of lanes and paths to explore as well as the 81-mile Morecambe Bay Cycle Route. Trains from the nearby station (1 mile) will take you to either end of this route.
Walking is a favourite pastime and the village and surrounding countryside has miles of footpaths to explore, often revealing places of incredible beauty and wildlife importance. This cottage is located within the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The smallest AONB in the UK, it is nevertheless packed with interest, much of it around the village and the estate. Most of the land neighbouring the house now belongs to the National Trust and is accessible by an extensive network of footpaths and bridleways. Close by are National Trust areas open to public access, full of wildlife interest, possessing a maze of paths to explore, some of the very best views over Morecambe Bay and providing ready access to the cliffs and shoreline.
Further afield there are woodlands and walks beyond measure to explore, most notable Eaves Wood, Gait Barrows National Nature Reserve and Arnside Knott. Arnside Knott is notable for spectacular views over the Kent estuary and some of the rarest and most endangered butterflies in the UK.
Leighton Moss - www.rspb.org.uk - is the largest reed bed in the north west of England and home to the RSPB. Here you can see some very rare bird species, including avocet, bittern, water rail, marsh harrier and bearded tit, as well as a huge variety of waterfowl, otters, red deer and occasionally, rare avian visitors. This is a place for young and old alike to experience and which is simply not to be missed.
Not content with our own little bit of paradise, we are surrounded by two most beautiful National Parks - The Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, as well as other Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty - The Forest of Bowland, Nidderdale and the North Pennines. We cannot begin to tell you here about all the things to see and do in these wonderful places - but if you ask, we’ll tell you all we know!
